As we continued to head south toward Florida, this past week Dave and I stopped at two terrific locations. The first, near Brevard, North Carolina, where leaf peepers were out in full force and the second, near Columbia, South Carolina which is the State’s capital.
The area surrounding Brevard, NC (south of Ashville) is known as the “Land of the Waterfalls”. One article indicated there are over 250 waterfalls in the vicinity. Our visitor’s brochure listed 21 of the “best” hikes to waterfalls. We hiked to 6 waterfalls in the few days were there. Each was beautiful in its own way. The Bridal Veil falls is where they filmed scenes for one of the Hunger Games movies. Unfortunately, during this time of the year, the water was quite low. I bet it is magical when the water is flowing over the smooth rocks.
We also found a great bakery in Brevard and I left with 4 huge pastries and 2 cookies. They were exceptional. It’s a good thing I don’t live there. I would have to allow myself to only go once a week! We were also told by locals to go to the drive-through BBQ stand for the best BBQ. The BBQ was really good but their baked beans were the best I have ever had. I wonder if they publish their recipe?
In our goal to visit National Parks while on our RV travels, we camped near Columbia, SC to visit Congaree National Park. The park preserves the largest tract of old growth bottomland hardwood forest left in the United States. Previously referred to as “swamp land”, the bottomland has lush trees growing in its floodplain forest and many are the tallest in the eastern United States. On our first visit to the park, we walked the 2.6-mile elevated boardwalk through the park, which provided 20 different educational stations on the various plants and trees in the forest. The next day we hiked on trails through the park, around rivers and over a few bridges to traverse flooded bottomland. During the rainy season, they often close the trails as they are completely flooded. We saw a wild pig while hiking and luckily Murphy was on a leash as he took off after the pig. I’m not sure what the outcome of that encounter might have been.
Our next stop is my all-time favorite city in the United States…Charleston, South Carolina.
