Slo Pace: Following Michigan’s Mitten Coastline

I’ve learned so much geography on this adventure.  I didn’t realize Lake Erie was connected to Lake Huron, first by the Detroit River, then Lake St. Clair and then the St. Clair River to Lake Huron.  Of course, the water all flows from the north (eventually over Niagara Falls), so we were battling currents as we traversed from Lake Erie to Lake Huron – but we made it!

Our first Lake Huron stop was near the bottom of the thumb at Lexington, MI.  There were several other loopers at the marina, some old friends and some new that I could introduce Little Beers to.  With nice weather, I was able to continue waxing the outside of the boat, this time sitting up on our “wings” to reach the topside.

Our next stop up the outside of the thumb was Port Sanilac, known for having the oldest hardware store in Michigan (opened in 1850) and a cool lighthouse which is now a private residence.  Murphy enjoyed swimming in Lake Huron on a dog friendly state beach.

Continuing north, we stopped at Harbor Beach, MI.   We had another docktails event and reconnected with our friends on Imagine and Godspeed II and met more new friends.  Darn it – I forgot to take a picture of the 14 of us out on the dock.  We had a line of Mainships in the marina, at least I got a picture of that – including Imagine, War Eagle, Betty Gail, Slo Pace plus a new friend Sea C Rider, also on a Mainship 400 on the next dock.   We also encountered a swan family and Daddy swan was extremely protective of his swanlings, especially when he saw Murphy nearby.

Our last stop this week was at East Tawas.  We crossed Saginaw Bay leaving the thumb and now we are on Michigan’s east coast.  Dave remembers camping at Tawas State Park when he was just a wee lad with his parents.  Due the weather, we are staying an extra day here.  That’s ok, there is a nice downtown area right across the street from the marina, lots of restaurants, shops, a movie theater and even 4 places to get ice cream.   I need to get on the scale soon…

Next weekend we will be visiting Mackinac Island.  Can’t wait!

Thanks for joining along on our adventure.  Till next update…

Brenda, with Captain Dave & Marvelous Murphy
